Freedom and Control - True Colors

2013

This painting is the fifth painting in the serie Freedom and Control.
I have given the name of the painting a lot of thought. Initially I called it "Landscaping". However this name felt short in covering the full charge of the painting. Another name I thought about was "Shine" which has a applicable double meaning in the dutch language. Finally, I chose the name "True Colors".   What you see seem to be the "true colors" of the canvas but the question is whether they truly are the true colors?   This painting is an expression of the physical and sometimes emotional situation in which we can find ourselves. The lines, little blocks and linear composition is a reflection of how our government governs over us with many laws, restrictions and structures. Even though this can give a beautiful picture on the outside we wonder how beautiful and colorful those layers are that are buried deep underneath these layers of control. How is it with our freedom? Can we really be ourselves? Are we happy with this reflection or do we desire colors that are more beautiful and richer?   Also on a more personal level we can ask ourselves whether we are truly being ourselves? How real are we? Are we showing our real identity? Do we live a free life? Does our mirror reflect an hypocritical image that looks okay on the outside while we cover our true colors and identity with a mask ? A mask that might be controlling our lives and keeps us captivated?

Freedom and Control – Positioning

2013

This painting is the fourth painting in the serie Freedom and Control. It is about a search for freedom and control. Can we control freedom? Is there freedom under control? Does a perfect balance between freedom and control exist?

Freedom and Control - Balance

2013

This painting is the third painting in the serie Freedom and Control. It is about a search for freedom and control. Can we control freedom? Is there freedom under control? Does a perfect balance between freedom and control exist?   When we observe our environment and existence we see that the basis of our human existence of mankind is founded on solid structures, rythms and patterns; the universe, the years, seasons, day and night, our human body, the beating of our hearts. All elements that almost unconsciously give structure to our lives that sometimes seem or can be so chaotic. So it is not chaos but structure that is predominant.   Seeking the right balance this painting shows us that despite the choas of our lives it is possible to create that balance when we manage to find the right elements or structures.

Freedom and Control - Design Art

2013

This painting is the second painting in the serie Freedom and Control. It is about a search for freedom and control. Can we control freedom? Is there freedom under control? Does a perfect balance between freedom and control exist?   Juist like the first in this serie this painting is build up with three layers that express the search for freedom and control.   A black mainly rectangular pattern of lines, sometimes provided with a grid is the first layer. This layer symbolizes the so-called "box thinking".   The second layer is a colorful layer of free expression and explosions. It symbolizes the ultimate form of free and natural expression in form and color and crushed every "box thinking".   The third layer is made of rectangular, transparant and fullcolor surfaces and white lines. They are a reflection of what we are doing and seeing around us in the built environment.A built environment that is mainly sleek, geometrical and rectangular in contrast to the organic, natural and free forms in our nature. For example those sleek modern houses that are built in a beautiful, natural scenery. Both attract our attention and reinforce each other in their own beauty. Similarly, a simple straight, white line can draw our attention in a random, colorful and abstract environment.
